Thinking about starting a family?

Talk to your doctor, a genetic counselor, a lab listed on this site or the Canavan Foundation when you are planning a pregnancy.

You are excited at the thought of becoming pregnant
and having a baby. You care about doing
everything to ensure having a healthy baby.
Do you know?

  • It's important to learn more about your genes. They contain information that will determine much about your baby.

  • 1 in 9 Jews of eastern European descent is a carrier of one of the nine Jewish genetic diseases. Some of them, like Tay-Sachs and Canavan disease, are fatal but they CAN BE PREVENTED!

  • You could be a carrier of one of the Jewish genetic diseases and not even know it?

  • Carriers of the gene for Canavan disease have NO symptoms and are not sick. If one parent is a carrier and the other is not, their baby could also be a carrier but cannot have the disease.

  • If both parents are carriers there is a 1 in 4 chance that their baby could be affected, but it doesn't have to be.
You've taken tests your whole life.
This test will ensure that you will
have a healthy baby.
What you can do.
  • Have a simple blood test! It will tell you what you need to know.

  • Talk to your doctor, a genetic counselor, a lab listed on this site or the Canavan Foundation when you are planning a pregnancy.

  • Follow this advice, even if this is not your first pregnancy.

BECOMING A PARENT IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT STEPS YOU WILL EVER TAKE.

YOU HAVE GIVEN SO MUCH THOUGHT TO OTHER
DECISIONS IN YOUR LIFE UP TO THIS POINT.

DON'T STOP NOW!
